What you are looking at
Barely a hat: a small mount of dove-grey satin loops, cream lace and a dark beaded net base with rhinestones and sequins, made to perch on hair worn up. Evening hats shrank to ornaments in the 1890s, partly good manners in a theatre seat, partly because the hair itself had become the structure. Madame Tierce was a milliner working under her own name, which was how the trade worked: the shop was the woman. Given by Mrs. Robert G. Olmsted to the Brooklyn Museum in 1965, transferred to the Met in 2009.
