What you are looking at
A short shoulder cape of black fronds, which the Met records as silk and beads, under a yoke of beadwork in red, green and gold and a high standing collar. Capes were the outerwear of the late 1890s because the sleeves of the day would not fit into a coat. This one is for evening: over a gown, to the theatre or the opera. Hollander was a Boston house that sold imported and made-to-order dress to the city's wealthiest families. Given by Mrs. Lee Woodward Zeigler in 1952.
